What is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast Augmentation Surgery, Breast Enlargement or Boob Job involves enhancement and sculpting of the breasts through the use of implants or re-injection of your own fat. Breast Augmentation or a ‘boob job’ – is still one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic surgery. The Augmentation procedure often reshapes the breasts, improves cleavage and/or corrects uneven breasts. This procedure often appeals to women who have always had smaller breasts. It is also popular with patients who once had larger breasts but have lost volume and shape due to fluctuations in weight, pregnancy, breastfeeding or other factors.

What are the benefits of Breast Augmentation (Enlargement)?

  • Increase the volume and size of smaller breasts
  • Improve the overall breast shape and nipple appearance
  • Create appealing fullness and cleavage in your breast area
  • Add volume fullness and firmness to breasts and cleavage
  • Enhance ‘side-boob’ proportions
  • Improve the look of asymmetrical breasts

What To Expect From Breast Augmentation ?

If you decide that you would like to undergo breast enlargement, our team will ensure that you are certain about your decision and you have received all the information you need to know before the surgery. You will need to book an initial consultation with the doctor to discuss what your goals are and how best these might be achieved, based on your specific breast examination. From here, he will be able to tell you the technique that he thinks would best suit your body and the results you want. At the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss any questions you may have and gain as much information as you can about the breast enlargement surgery.

Once you have made your decision and decide you want to go ahead with the breast augmentation Essex surgery, you will attend a second consultation with the doctor to go over the planned surgery again and answer any more questions you may have.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation ?

The procedure typically takes between one and two hours and you will be put under general anesthetic throughout the duration of the breast enlargement procedure. The implants will be inserted through a cut in the crease underneath your breast. A ‘pocket’ for the implant is made either above or below the muscle, depending on what has been decided before the breast augmentation surgery. An adjustable trial implant can be used to ensure that the correct size has been selected. Once the chosen implant has been inserted, using a special sterile technique, the wound is carefully sewn up using dissolving stitches which are hidden under the skin. Dressings are applied over the scars and you are placed into a special compression bra to provide comfort and support.

What To Expect After Breast Augmentation ?

It is normal to have some discomfort after breast enlargement surgery and you will be given pain relief to help with this. If your chest feels tight, or your breasts and ribs feel tender then don’t worry, as this is common. When you wake up after surgery, you will be wearing a special support bra to help keep your implants in position. Patients are typically advised to stay overnight, to allow the nurses and the doctor to make sure you are ok and give yourself time to recover after the surgery. After your breast enlargement surgery, you mustn’t drive yourself, so you must get a responsible adult to drive you home.

Your follow-up appointment will be given to you before you leave. Usually, these appointments are 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 6 months after the procedure, to ensure that everything is healing correctly. In addition to this, you will also receive information and advice about caring for healing wounds after plastic surgery, as well as all the common “do’s and don’ts”. It is recommended that you do not drive for two weeks after your breast enlargement and that you don’t return to the gym until 6 weeks after the surgery.

While you recover from breast enlargement surgery, you will probably find that you have some discomfort, bruising and swelling, which will take a few weeks to settle. This is normal with many procedures, including Abdominoplasty surgery and body contouring surgery. Due to this, you may need to take a week or two off work and take over-the-counter painkillers. Don’t do any strenuous exercise or even lift anything heavy during the first few weeks after the procedure. You will be provided with a support bra to wear for the first 6 weeks after surgery.

Although the scars under your breasts will start off quite red, this will only be for the first few weeks, after which they will slowly fade over 6 to 12 months. Be prepared for your breasts to slowly change shape over the first few months, as they gradually settle down after breast enlargement surgery.

Is breast enlargement surgery dangerous?

Breast enlargement surgery is very common and generally very safe. However, there are risks associated with all forms of surgery and it is important to familiarize yourself with these risks before making any decision. The doctor will discuss these risks in detail with you. This includes risks associated with the breast implants, such as capsular contracture (tight scar tissue forming around the implants) or rupture and general risks of surgery such as bleeding and infection.

Does breast enlargement surgery leave scars?

The scar from breast enlargement surgery is hidden in the crease under your breast. The scar is kept as short as possible, whilst allowing the implant pocket to be created and the implant to pass through. A special funnel is used to squeeze the implant through the narrow incision, which is usually about 4 to 5 cm long. The stitches are under the skin and dissolvable. With regular moisturizing and massage, the scar normally fades to a thin line after 6 to 12 months, but of course results do vary.
